What to Do If Your AC Stops Working?

Don’t panic – it happens even to the best of us. When your AC unit suddenly stops working, it can feel daunting. Thankfully, there are a few simple ways you can troubleshoot whether or not your unit needs an AC repair.

Make Sure It’s Turned Off

Make sure AC is turned off by checking your thermostat first. AC units typically have an automatic setting that can be used when you’re away from home for an extended period. Double-check that it is indeed off before deciding that it’s broken.

Check the Circuit Breaker

The first thing you should do is check the AC’s circuit breaker. If it’s tripped, turn it back on and wait for an hour to see if your AC kicks in again – if not, there could be a technical problem with your AC unit that requires AC repair or AC service.

Check the Weather

If it’s dark and cloudy or windy outside, but you aren’t sure if it’s going to storm, check the weather forecast. There could be an outage or power failure in your area.

Check the Filters

One of the first things you should also check is your AC unit’s filters. Replacing your AC filters every month will not only improve air quality in your home but also improve efficiency by channeling more cold air through your AC vents. Dirty AC filters can decrease airflow and cause your AC system to work harder than usual – resulting in a possible AC repair or even early AC replacement if it suddenly breaks down.

Check for Leaking Coolant

After checking your circuit breaker, weather patterns, and AC filters, look around for any telltale signs of leaking coolant – puddles of water on the ground near your AC unit and strong odors like gasoline or vinegar (which AC units give off when they’re overheating).

If you do notice a leak, don’t touch it. Coolant is hazardous to your health and the environment, so you should never touch AC oil with your bare hands. If AC oil gets on your skin, wash it off thoroughly and call an AC repair professional at the earliest convenience.

Get an AC Repair

AC units will begin to lose efficiency after many years of continuous use, and neglecting minor AC problems can turn into costly AC replacements if left untreated for too long. Taking a proactive approach and addressing minor AC problems early on will help prevent further damage from happening and causing larger AC repair bills later down the road.
